Nithraid 2018 – Ritual Procession

Nithraid is an annual river festival event that celebrates Dumfries and its relationship with the river Nith. The event combines a community engagement program, a procession, boat races, dunking a salty coo effigy, live music and entertainment program along the shore of the river Nith in Dumfries. For 2018 the organisers of Nithraid, The Stove Network, commissioned Maddjakallss to create, design and deliver of the procession which would lead the community from the High Street, through the town to the riverside Nith Village site on Mill Green. The brief for the theme of the community work and procession was RITUAL. MJK provided an impressive choreographed visual procession, including majikal beings of light and dark, sacred shapes created by the community and an audio soundtrack and drumming collaborative that will marched through the town. Culminating in a theatrical ending with smoke effects, visual ritual movements of homage to the river and a sacred space installation for the community to place their shapes on, creating a live art piece to be observed for the day.
MJK worked with local drummers Zanzebeatz to create their own procession audio. ZanzibeatZ (community drummers) We loved every minute of it. You guys are amazing. Thank you for asking us to be part of this. We cannot wait to work on more things together with you! Love you guys. The community were entranced and engaged with the symbolic and dynamic special effects we included in this day time public event. People became engrossed in the magic of true participation and enjoyed the spectacle of being part of something a little bit different. MJK also worked with other key collaborators taking part in the event to ensure crowds were engaged with events in two locations. The Stove Network’s Orchestrator. Matt Baker said “Nithraid was a great day for the community and you guys were totally at the heart of all that…thank you for all that you put into the project- I know from first hand just how committed you were to all the workshops and everything you made happen for the procession and Nithraid Village.

LUXE– Big Burns Supper

Luxe at the Big Burns Supper was an incredible two person visual and narrative part performance, part installation created in collaboration with CoCo Creative. Designed to pose the question of ‘what is reality?’

Cleverly enacted with audience participation, and impressive visual graphics, the audience were made to feel part of a simulation. The show, Luxe, accompanied you through a series of experiments to challenge your lucidity and break down your understanding of past, here and now and future.

It was an outstanding performance which you feel you will never see again. It was the weirdest thing I have ever seen that I totally understood. We all agreed on the way out that it had left us with a sense of wonder. And lots and lots of glitter in our hair.

AS ABOVE SO BELOW – Nithraid 2015

As Above So Below is a piece of an outdoor interactive performance art commissioned to the Young Stovies for Nithraid. The show was created by us and explored the esoteric correspondences of the ‘as above so below’ adage put forward by Hermes Trismegistus and re-worded by Isaac Newton:

Tis true without lying, certain and most true. That which is below is like that which is above and that which is above is like that which is below to do the miracles of one only thing. And as all things have been and arose from one by the meditation of one: so all things have their birth from this one thing by adaptation.
Issac Newton
After an intense collaborative effort and mighty non-linear thinking we came up with a visually stunning piece that featured a platform with two metallic pyramids, a unicorn, rainbow smoke bombs, themselves clad in white as magi or officiants wearing sunglasses, a time capsule and a balloon release.

It is easy to assume that the result might be somewhat eclectic. But as the figures moved in the wisps of coloured smoke, the transparent fabric of their capes swirled with them creating an illusion of a grand esoteric ceremony unfolding on the banks of the river Nith – the future meeting the past, the cosmic forces joining human spirit and the material echoing the ephemeral.

Throughout the performance of nighttime for the Big Burns Supper 2018, Maddjakallss created a learning experience for their audience using performance and storytelling as a platform. This allowed the community to engage with local history, philosophoical concepts and esoteric teachings in a fun and friendly manner. Inspiring a desire for community members to get involved in the regeneration of their town

Nighttime was a one off event, and forms part 1 of an ever evolving story. Maddjakalls are currently working on part 2. Owing to the nature of nighttime we can adapt it to suit any towns local history, if you are interested in hosting a majikal mystery tour of your town please get in touch.
